Out of all the martial arts available in this area, why would someone choose Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

This is one of the most common questions that our visiting guests ask. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has an incomparable past, and our answer to this question is based solely upon how Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu evolved to become one of the most respected and appreciated martial art forms in the world. When you read along, three reasons become apparent why so many students have been able to make this practical and easy selection of a lifelong martial art style.

Reason #1: Most fights end on the ground

Ground fighting is typically where all skirmishes end, so this assumption plays directly to the strength of the art form. Not long ago when the Gracie family founded Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, they issued a challenge to any and all fighters, regardless of background. As a result, audience members continuously observed if an opponent was primarily throwing punches or using kicks, then they lost every time against the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu martial artist. These incomplete competing fighters were mostly held back by limited and stagnant training, and were entirely exposed once they were taken to the ground. Within our classes students soon feel completely prepared with this one-of-a-kind and totally evolved form of ground fighting. It is no wonder Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has made an everlasting impression within the world of martial arts.

Reason #2: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu does not contain punching or kicking techniques

The practice of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is not kata-driven, like the predetermined moves found within Taekwondo or Karate. This means during sparring, students have a freedom to exert maximum strength to simulate a real life struggle or conflict. Unlike a risky fist fight where combatants attempt to hit with full weight behind a punch, students seldom suffer major injury due to the limited space with sparring partners. Additionally, not having to memorize scripted moves also allows more time for our instructors to teach the important fundamentals. Soon, the student improves upon grappling maneuvers and submission holds, becomes more agile, and has more confidence if the need arises to fight or defend oneself.

Reason #3: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has very few rules and regulations

It is important to understand that during training, students realize they are not overwhelmed with many performance restrictions. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructors do not hamper the student from using his entire skill set, and they encourage growth and preparation for a realistic fighting scenario. This teaching approach is effective against all types of combatants, regardless of experience. This foundation was designed specifically to allow the fighter to respond quickly with full freedom to apply necessary and required maneuvers when needed. No other available martial art form completely prepares a fighter for all realistic fighting scenarios such as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu does.
